The Futhark Alphabet: Reading the Viking Runes
Runes are an ancient system of symbols used by Germanic and Norse peoples not only as writing, but as keys to wisdom and reflection. Our system uses the 24-symbol Elder Futhark. Casting the runes helps you connect with the unconscious and evaluate your current dilemmas through Norse mythology and archetypes.
The Origin of the Runes
Historically, runes were carved on wood, stone, or bone. Each symbol carries a broad conceptual meaning and is associated with natural elements, deities, or everyday forces (like Fehu for abundance or Isa for ice and pause). Their reading is direct, practical, and action-oriented.
Advice in the Cast
A rune cast does not seek to scare or promise miracles. Each rune drawn represents an active energy in your environment or mind. The upright and reversed (Merkstave) interpretations allow you to discern if that force is flowing freely or if it is blocked or misdirected.
Daily Reading and Meditation
You can use runes as a daily meditation exercise. Just like the card of the day, drawing a rune in the morning offers an archetype to reflect on throughout the day, helping to train your conscious attention on aspects of your character.
Frequently asked questions
- What does it mean if a rune has no reversed position?
- There are 9 symmetrical runes (like Gebo or Hagalaz) that read the same upright or reversed. They indicate absolute forces or situations where the path is clear regardless of perspective.
- Are runes a predictive method?
- They are considered a tool for advice and energetic diagnosis. They show you the state of the forces at play so you can make better decisions.
- How are reversed runes interpreted?
- They indicate that the rune's energy is blocked, in excess, or requires introspection before manifesting in the external world.
